Option 1: Use American-style English spelling

Option 3: Use first writer theory
Whoever starts the article first, that style will continue in the story in future revisions.

Option 4: Use the respect for locality approach
Refer to someone or something in the way that they use self-references. Examples: use "U.S." and "UK" since that is the most-common way each refers to itself. In addition, the dateline indicates spellings proper to that locale should be used: "labor unions" in U.S.-datelined stories and as "labour unions" in UK-datelined stories.

-- PeterR 13:10, 19 Feb 2005 I had difficulty choosing between options 3 and 4. I think 4 should be the ideal, but 3 is OK. In other words - let originators use their own spelling, but no grounds for complaint if someone updates the language to relate to the country the news is about.
