SciScoop shuts down
From Wikinews, the free news source you can write!
March 30, 2005
SciScoop, an online collaborative science news source, shuttered is proverbial doors Tuesday after two and a half years in operation, according to a notice on the web site.
Site founder, Ricky James cited lack of funding and low community participation as the reason to close the portal, which specialized on breaking news in the science and theoretical technology area. "Only around 5% or so of our total membership comes to the site in any given 30 day period and even fewer post anything when they get here - stories or comments," he said in a written statement.
James said the majority of the traffic to the site, which averages more than 27 thousand hits a day, comes from SciScoop headlines being carried on other web sites, like Slashdot and the Google news feed. Traffic to the site peaking in December 2004 with just over 36 thousand hits a day.
According to James, during its months of operation, SciScoop had accumulated more than 1,200 stories.
