IRA orders end to armed campaign
A statement from the IRA today declared an end to its armed campaign and further stated intent to pursue exclusively peaceful means. The IRA apparently made this declaration after internal debate prompted by Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams' call to pursue its goals exclusively through politics. Also important in the statement - following recent discussion on the apparent criminal activities of members of the IRA - is the order to "volunteers" not to engage "in any other activities whatsoever". An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is said to be "broadly happy" with the content and message of the statement.Full story
