Data for 3 million UK driving candidates lost

The details of 3 million British learner drivers has been lost in Iowa, in the USA.
The data was lost on a hard drive that was owned by a private contractor .
Details were given by the UK Transport Secretary, Ruth Kelly, in the House of Commons at 1730 UTC today. This is most of the information that was released to the public.
It is the first major loss of data in the UK since 25 million people's data was lost by HM Revenue and Customs a few months ago.
In the announcement Ruth Kelly said:
Pearson were the private contractors
The government try to keep personal data as secure as possible
No bank account details were compromised
Date of Birth was not in the personal data lost
She defended the use of private contractors
Driver's signature was not lost
People are informed it their data is held abroad
